Scott Smith (Army) Date of Death: June 7, 2022

On June 7, 2022, Scott Nelson Smith went to live with his Heavenly Father.

His 64 years on this earth were filled with numerous experiences, starting with his growing up the only son of Nelson and Thelma (Lee) Smith with four sisters in Defiance, Ohio. Following graduation from Tinora High School in 1976, he joined the U S Army and dedicated the next 10 years of his life to serving his country. He was stationed in Germany in the latter years of service and enjoyed seeing other nearby countries when on leave.

Scott moved around a lot when he returned home after military service, and had many jobs in his life, but the last 30 years were spent mostly in North Carolina in the mechanic trade. He loved working with his hands and had an unbelievable work ethic. He was always willing to step in and help someone in need. He enjoyed helping the American Legion and was a member of New Life Christian Church. His servant’s heart and joy in living will carry on through those who knew him best. He will be deeply missed.

Scott is survived by his wife, Kimberly Smith; his father, Nelson Smith and partner, Helen Herr, Brownsville, TX; his sons, Alex Sinka and wife, Brittany, and Andrew Sinka and wife, Julianna; his grandchildren, Annabelle, Benjamin, and Ember Sinka, his sisters, Kelly Smith, Staci Kaufman, and Jody (Kevin) Smith, all of Defiance, Ohio, and Lisa (Bob) Gruebel, Powell, Ohio; nieces and nephews Colleen (Tyler) Fockler, and Kacie (Tom) Postema, Defiance, and Ryan Gruebel, Coralville, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 14, 2022, in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Eddie Eckerd, Minister, officiating. Burial will be private at Eastern North Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2022, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be planting a Memorial Tree in Scott’s name or a donation to the Duke Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Center, Durham, NC.

Noah Joyner, Jr. (Navy) Date of Death: July 15, 2022

Noah Joyner, Jr. 96, passed away peacefully at home on July 15 surrounded by his loving family.  Born in Lenoir County, Noah admirably served his country in the United States Military from 1942 to 1963. Noah enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 serving as a signalman. Following a brief assignment aboard a subchaser and mine tender on the Atlantic coast, Noah participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the Pacific theater where he served on the Admiral’s command ship USS Estes during the invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Following World War II Noah enlisted in the US Army Airborne serving the remainder of his 21 year military career in the 11 th Airborne Division and 187 th Infantry Regiment (Rakkasans) where he received  glider and parachute training . Noah’s Airborne service included two tours of duty and combat jumps in the Korean War.

Following his retirement Noah continued to serve his community as a member and past Commander of the American Legion Shaw-May Post 38. Noah co-founded the USS Estes Association, was a founding sponsor of the United States Army Museum, founding sponsor of the World War II Memorial, founding member of the Korean War National Museum, charter member of the 1814 Society of the Army Historical Foundation, 187 th Airborne Regimental Combat Team Association member, and Associate member of the United States Naval Institute.

Noah is survived by his loving wife Jane of 73 years.  Noah was preceded in death by his parents Noah and Emily Pate Joyner, brothers Leonard (Red), Dennis (DJ), Paul, and Wilbur, twins Velna and Velma, and sisters, Mamie, Laura Mae, and Katie.  Also surviving to cherish his memory are his children Ann Timberlake (Steve), Renee Rouse, (Doug), Lori and her partner Jane, and his son Michael Joyner.  He was Papa to Chris (Holly), Stephanie, Jeremy (Lynn), Morgan, Hillary, and Noah Samuel (Taylor).  Noah’s great grandchildren included Emma and Eli, Emmerson and Josephine, Camden, and Aela.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 19, 2022, in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Joe Sandoval officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family is requests consideration of a memorial donation to Veteran and Military service organizations that support service members and their families

Garvey Beasley (Army) Date of Death: February 19, 2022

Garvie Dolan Beasley, 99, passed away on February 19, 2022. He was born August 3, 1922 in Harnett County, He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Dora Dean Inscoe Beasley, mother mary Reba Denning Morris, Step father Lee Morris, siblings Dorothy Barnes, and Jimmy Beasley. Garvie served his country in the US Army during World War II, with the 84 Infantry Division in the European theater, an active member of widow’s son masonic lodge 519. Left to cherish his memory are his family, son Vander Beasley and wife Susan of Spring Hope, NC, Sisters Mary Lee Daniel of Littleton, NC, Betty Dickens of Roanoke Rapids, NC a special friend, Barbara Jones of Gaston, a long with many loving and much-loved nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 10 am to 11:00 am at Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC located at 731 Roanoke Ave. Roanoke Rapids North Carolina 27870. A graveside service will follow at 11:00am at Cedarwood Cemetery. Richard McCrae Odom (USAF) Date of Death: March 21, 2026

Richard McCrae Odom, 80 of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday March 21, 2026. Richard was born on July 18, 1945, in Warren County, North Carolina. He was preceded in death his parents Herbert and Margaret Odom and his brother Charles F. Odom.

He is survived by his wife Ann, stepson Kevin Smith (Jennie), sisters Patricia Odom Hawkins (Richard), Susan Lewis (Billy), grandchild Ashely Smith and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother; he served his country in the United States Air Force, he loved to do woodworking projects. He was a member of Twin City Rifle Club, American Legion Post 38 and 95th Squadron model airplane club.
