While Memorial Day weekend might consists of family gatherings, store sales and backyard barbeques to kick off the 2021 summer activities—it’s also important to pause the festivities in remembrance of the real meaning and history behind Memorial Day. In honor of that sentiment, Lee Greenwood’s song God Bless The USA comes to mind. “And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free. And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.” During Memorial Day weekend, the men and women of Shaw-May Post 38 will endeavor to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of the 400-plus veterans buried at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. In a gesture of gratitude, Post 38 members will rally at Crestview Cemetery at 9:00 AM on May 29th to place a wreath and approximately 450 small US flags atop the grave markers of all the US veterans who lie in rest at this cemetery. This is the real purpose behind Memorial Day – remembrance and commemoration of our Nation’s heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice. RIP heroes – Post 38 wont forget you!
